Reed's Creek Project Area

Reeds Creek Wetlands Restoration

Project Summary & Objectives:

  • Location: 15 acres on Reed's Creek and adjacent land between N.C. Highway 21 and Lake Norman, just North of Exit 33 on I-77, and immediately South of the new Cypress Landing Town Homes.

  • Goal: To improve water quality, and aquatic and wildlife habitat on the site.

  • Situation: Funds for mitigation project provided by N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program, which seeks  to offset damage to streams and wetlands during private development or state road construction with other restoration projects. The Reed's Creek Project is designed to mitigate for wetlands damage elsewhere in the Catawba River Basin.

  • Project Contractor: Mid-Atlantic Mitigation of Concord, NC.

  • Project Scope

  1. Removal of creek side berm to allow flooding of project site (done).

  2. Installations of test/monitoring devices (done).

  3. Monitoring of project site until 1012.

  4. Removal of litter and tires from creek and site (done).

  5. LNWC site analysis for placement of bird nesting boxes.

  6. Manufacturing and installation of nesting boxes, etc.

  7. Patrolling of site by LNWC for litter pickup and general inspection.

  8. Work to have wire fence erected on both side of Hwy 21 over Reed's Creek to prevent litter and tires from entering creek.

  9. Effort by LNWC to engage adjacent property owners in enhancement of project area.

Reeds Creek Wetland Monitoring Report

 Time Period:  May 22 to June 1, 2008

 Birds Observed:

Male and female wood duck couple is regularly feeding and roosting in Huntington Woods channel near wood duck nesting box posted by LNWC volunteers.

Prothonotary warbler spotted feeding in large water willow on island, not far from warbler box posted by LNWC volunteers. Warblers heard calling from surrounding trees.

Three green herons, possibly part of a small colony, demonstrating nesting behavior in the wetlands as they did last summer.

Also spotted were: osprey, little blue heron, great blue heron, mallard family (4-5 ducklings), 6 red-winged blackbirds, 4 Canada geese, 5 black vultures, summer tanager, great egret, chimney swifts, belted kingfisher, Eastern bluebirds, rubythroated hummingbird. Plus many common birds, of course, such as cardinal, Carolina chickadee, Carolina wren, blue jay, crow, mockingbird, mourning dove, house finch and goldfinch.

 Other Animals Observed and/or Heard:

Brown bat, muskrat, barking frog, Fowlers toad, chorus frog, gray tree frog, aquatic turtles (size of slider), newly-hatched fish (minnows).
